snake series

Completely transfixed by snakes and the complexity of their scales, I have hardly been able to bring myself to create anything else over the past four years. Each snake in this never-ending series forces me to slow down and find a new way to fit the puzzle of the animal into its undulating body.

They are not me, they are time. They are hours and hours of patience and discovery. Hours of frustration and overwhelming joy. They answer my question of “what is ink and water?” (and a bit of gold).

My snakes take first form in graphite on paper, an ever-winding mess of lines. Each diamond is then filled with ink as I bring life into this two-dimensional creature. Finally trapping the animal in a sea of 23K gold or sterling silver, it is immortalized as a reminder to be present in order to come alive.
